The name of Hamburg Airport was added to the name supplement "Hamburg Airport Helmut Schmidt" on 10 November 2016 in honor of the late Chancellor and honorary citizen of Hamburg Helmut Schmidt. Erfurt-Weimar Airport is an international commercial airport in Erfurt. It is operated by Erfurt GmbH Airport, which is 95% owned by the Free State of Thuringia and 5% by the City of Erfurt. The airport is located about five kilometers west of the Erfurt city center in the district Bindersleben. The junction Erfurt-Bindersleben the Federal Highway 71 is located about three kilometers away, as well as the south running federal highway 7. It is about 30 kilometers to the center of Weimar. With the tram line 4 of the Erfurt public transport company, the airport can be reached from the city center as well as from Erfurt main station by public transport.
