Palma Airport or Palma de Mallorca Airport also known as Son Sant Joan Airport which is located 8 kilometers east of Palma Majorca, it is the third largest airport in Spain after Madrid and Barcelona Airports. It is considered a busy airport having handled over 21 million passengers in 2009. As a base it is used by the Spanish carrier Air Europa and German carrier Air Berlin.

Terminals at Palma de Mallorca Airport 

Palma Airport has four terminals (A, B, C, D). Terminal A: serves most domestic flights, British bound low fare fights, Charter flights landing in the airport also use this terminal, while Terminal B, C and D: cater for international flights.

In 1958, an increase in passenger traffic resulted the need for a second terminal and in 1965 this addition was completed and known as terminal B. The terminal was later moved and is now located next to the control tower. It is used for inter-island flights. Palma De Mallorca Airport has a capacity of 25 million passengers per year, dispatching 12,000 passengers per hour. Currently the Airport has the capacity of handling 25 million passengers per year but there are future plans for expansion to allow it to handle up to 32 million passengers annually.

History of Palma de Mallorca Airport 

Palma Airport in the 1920s was used by seaplanes. Since that time when in 1965 a new terminal was built the airport has gone through gradual renovation with considerable improvements and this was the outcome of the ever increasing number of passengers passing through Palma Airport. In 1974 a second runway was completed to handle more of the traffic in the airport. A power plant was also built to cater for the rising energy needs. Palma Airport's communications center was upgraded and fire-fighting facilities included. In 1980, Palma Airport has already handled 7 million passengers. This steadily increased to 10 million in 1986 necessitating the installation of another terminal. The construction of this terminal begun in 1993 and ended in 1997.
