The airport Hohenems is located between Hohenems and Dornbirn. The airfield is home to powered aircraft, gliders and parachutists as well as a helicopter of the BMI. History and development over the years
Before the Second World War, there were some small airfields in Vorarlberg, which were mainly used for gliding. In the 1930s, there were first considerations for an airfield in Bregenz and later was the idea of a regional airport in Ried - west of Dornbirn. Several other smaller airfields in Frastanz, Götzis, Lustenau or Dornbirn were hardly expandable because of their location. For this reason, the airfield in Hohenems was upgraded to the national airfield. Since this would have exceeded the financial resources of the Sportfluggruppe Hohenems, the airfield was taken over by the Vorarlberger Aero Club, which still operates it today.
