Helsinki Vantaa Airport is the main airport of Helsinki. It is located in the city Vantaa, in the north of Helsinki. From the airport to Downtown is 20 km. The airport is operated by state-owned Finavia. In the airport there is a Metro, so it is very easy to get to and from the airport. The airport is the largest in Finland and the fourth busiest in the Nordic countries in terms of passenger numbers. Airline passengers have several times chosen Helsinki Airport as one of the best airports in Europe. In March 2018, Skytrax World Airport Ranking elected Helsinki Airport as the best airport in Northern Europe.
History and development of the airport
Helsinki Vantaa Airport was built in 1952 for that year's Summer Olympics. Till 1956 in the airport there was single runway, and the second runway being built in 1956. Regular jet flight operations began in 1959. In 2000, the airport handled over 10 million passengers for the first time in its history. The third runway was inaugurated on 28 November 2002. In 2011, Helsinki Airport saw its biggest growth in a single year in the number of passengers. The number of annual passengers was increased by 2 million passengers and the airport reached the milestone of 14 million passengers.
Infrastructure of Helsinki Vantaa Airport
Terminal 1 is called the Domestic Terminal and was the first one opened in the airport. Boarding gates 11 - 15 are located in this terminal (in the nearly future also gates 1-15). Currently airlines don’t operate long haul flights from Terminal 1.
Terminal 2 is the International Terminal, opened in 1969. It has gates 32-38 and 16-60, and although is known as the international terminal, it also serves some domestic flights. Charter flights are handled at Terminal 2 and almost 30 airlines are using T2. It has a new shopping area, restaurants, bars, etc.
