Barcelona Airport - Barcelona El Prat Airport

Barcelona El Prat Airport is the main airport in Barcelona, located in the southwest, 14 km away from the city center. It is considered among 40th largest airports in the world by the number of passengers. The airport has two terminals (T1 and T2).

History

Back to 1916, Barcelona El Prat Airport was located at El Remolar, in the grounds of La Volatería farm. In 1948, runway 07-25 was built –the one currently used as the primary runway– crossing over the runway that existed at the time and between 1948 and 1952, a third runway was added, and taxiways and a passenger terminal were built. In 1963, the airport reached its first million passengers. On 4 November, the Barcelona-Madrid air shuttle service began and already in 1977, passenger traffic got over 5 million. However, T1 terminal became the most emblematic project of the expansion of Barcelona-El Prat Airport when starting its operations in June 2009 and finally on June 2011, On 6 June 2011, the airport's name was officially changed to Barcelona-El Prat, in response to a request from the Town Council of El Prat de Llobregat. In 2016, Barcelona El Prat Airport served more than 44 million passengers and in 2017, the number has increased to more than 47 Million passengers.
