Athens International Airport
Athens Airport (ATH) was named after Eleutherios Venizelos, who was a strong political figure and benefactor of the aviation industry. It is the largest and busiest airport in Greece. Without traffic, a taxi ride from Athens airport to downtown Athens takes about 25 minutes. The center of Athens is 33 km from the airport. Finally, you must use the local roads, depending on the exact location of your destination in the city center. Athens Airport consists of two terminals: the Main Terminal and the Satellite Terminal. Athens Airport Main Terminal operates with non-Schengen and intra-Schengen flights. It has 144 check-in desks and 14 jet bridges. Main Terminal consist of a building of three floors: arrivals, departures and a food court level. Satellite Terminal is located south of the Main Terminal. It is only used during the high seasons, when traffic increases. The terminal only serves Schengen flights. It has gates from A30 to A39. Satellite Terminal has two floors: Ground level – Arrivals and First level - Departures.
History and development over the years
Although the completion of the second terminal at the old Athens-Ellinikon airport took place in 1971, it was already foreseeable that the existing terrain would not be sufficient. The choice was either new land reclamation on the sea or a new terrain to be developed. In this context, the municipality Spata was proposed for the first time. Following a tendering procedure, construction on 31 July 1995 was awarded to a consortium under the leadership of the German Hochtief AG in a project based on a public-private partnership. Accordingly, Hochtief is involved with 39.97%. This construction project was the largest infrastructure project in the modern history of Greece as well as the largest international airport project to date based on private financing. The new building cost just over 2 billion euros. A German consortium headed by the construction company Hochtief and involving ABB, Krantz-TKT, J & P and Frankfurt Flughafen AG (now Fraport) has planned, financed and built the airport. The tower and the air traffic control building were planned and executed by J & P. The financing is designed as a project financing. In 2001, the complex was opened to traffic and the old airport closed. In 2009, the airport handled about 16.2 million passengers.
